When Chester was founded by the Romans in AD79 during the reign of Emperor Vespasian it was initially a fort named Deva Victrix and was one of the main Roman army camps in Britannia and later became a major civilian settlement. The walls which were built the Romans were strengthened and extended by the Saxons to protect the city against Viking invaders and meant that Chester was one of the last settlements to fall to the Normans.
